This is a true document of The Young Republic's growth as a band. More than our studio catalogue - which, in retrospect, is wildly all over the place - these live "Lounge Act" sessions at WOXY in Cincinnati, OH from 2006 - 2009 show our progression in musicianship, songwriting and personality.
Listening back, we were so freakin' excited about our first appearance (on any radio station) in 2006 (note the laughter during the interviews), not to mention nervous. We were sloppy as hell, but we had spirit and we had a blast.
By the time 2009 rolled around, the laughter subsided and professionalism had crept in but musically we weren't too shabby, delivering some pretty decent performances which rival the studio recordings - especially "Bronagh" which is superior here.
The interviews for each session are sometimes informative, sometimes awkward (cringe-worthy), and sometimes clever.
Aside from the 2009 session, other notable performances here include the 2007, completely rearranged version of "Blue Skies" - not found anywhere else - the takes of "Third Night Balcony" and "Two-Step Darling" - both featured heavily in our live show for a while but never released in studio version - and Bob's "Mary Ellen," which was left unfinished in the studio but was really fun to play and makes me happy to hear now.
Over these four sessions we got signed, lost members, toured the states, toured Europe, left school, built a studio and grew up.
Dedicated to Mike and Shiv.
